A lot of people are screaming throuple and just writing the porn (which I get! It’s fun!). But reading them come is not enough for me. lol Toxicity is hot until it’s just damaging and sad for everyone. I want real happiness for these three weirdos.
The end of the film was meant to be the very beginning of something. Just the spark of an idea of them coming back to one another. But the real work starts after.
And I think it would probably be a step-by-step thing.
I can see Patrick and Art working to draw closer, with that strong foundation of their childhoods to build off of. Obviously having to resolve the hurt that so much time and distance caused them, and both being willing to forgive. But it’s clear at the end of the film that the door is open for that. They grew up together. There’s a real root of knowing that I think could carry them through the toughest parts early on. Their relationship evolving feels possible.
And Tashi and Art’s marriage would find some breathing room and maybe even some renewed delight for having Patrick present and loving on them both. Kinda seeing each other again through his eyes type thing. Remembering they’re more than who they have been to each other for over a decade (both operating in one mode to survive, never quite enough for each other -- not totally fulfilled and not appreciated in their fullness).
I don’t think Patrick and Tashi would be having sex at this point, but I can see like.tennis dates where they bicker. Just them all learning how to be in each other’s space for extended periods of time and enjoy it.
And maybe Art wouldn’t resent Tashi so much for not being able to give him everything (so much has been taken from her — she just doesn’t have all that much left. She’s been doing her best.) and maybe Tashi would feel more at peace seeing them play each other and knowing Art is really loving tennis, not just playing for her. Connecting with them both in that space and finding joy in tennis again, so it’s not just routine and pain and loss for her.
With that healing happening concurrently (with therapists as support, of course), I think they’d get far. And then once those relationships are more secure, once Art and Tashi learn how they relate to each other when he isn’t winning for her (which would be something new. They don’t know what that looks like yet!) then Patrick and Tashi, having learned way more about themselves in relationship and how to communicate, might start working on their side of the triangle lol.
I could see them all exploring and working out the intimacy over time — not just sex, but intimacy -- what do they each need and how do they need it? And kink too, the various ways they each want/need to give or receive so they all feel truly satisfied.
And of course they’ll be partners co-parenting. All of them.
I can see Tashi finally grieving her injury, the life she lost, and rediscovering her love of tennis, not to win, but for the joy of being on the court. Her sobs the first time she plays again and it’s not competitively, just a little volley, but it’s like she’s finally alive again. Reminding herself she’s a leader in tennis the space still, that she can build success in that world even without Art’s career, but maybe it looks different. I see a healed Tashi learning to enjoy teaching kids. Taking on more protege. And letting Art and Patrick come help at her tennis camps.
Art retiring like he said he wanted, running the foundation as Tashi steps back. Realizing that he’s actually pretty good at this business thing and going back to school for a Master’s in nonprofit leadership. Meeting new people. Making friends (that aren’t Patrick). Getting invited to a pottery class and seeing he loves to work with his hands. Playing tennis with Patrick on the weekends.
And my heart for stay-at-home dad Patrick. Who always forgets to change over the laundry and leaves his keys everywhere and puts the babies' shoes on the wrong feet. But my god he loves those kids so goddamn much. Patrick learning to cook for the family and getting really good at it like he does anything he hyper-focuses on. Patrick finally having a home with the two people he loves most and figuring out how to create some routine and stability for himself within that container.
The love in that home. Ugh. I think it’s possible! I think they can do it! It just takes work.

Nathan/Vlad/Ursula created by @thebibliosphere.
Description provided by @powerpolyculeshowdown.
Nathan/Vlad/Ursula: For most of the book it's about two of the characters' romance (Vlad and Nathan) and Ursula meets them closer to the end. Their relationship, I think, is supposed to be continued in the next book. They all kiss each other and it's clear from the book that they like each other, and are all open to polyamory.
Description provided by @powerpolyculeshowdown.
Zagreus and Megaera are exes, while Zagreus and Thanatos have very obvious romantic feelings for each other. As part of the story, you can romance both of them at the same time, and it is made clear that neither of them minds it. There's also a scene implying Meg and Than had something in the past.
Description provided by @leverage-ot3.
leverage ot3 description: three good robinhood-esque criminals that fuck over corporations and give back to the people that were hurt by them. ultra competent. hardison is a geeky hacker, eliot is a grumpy hitter, and parker is the best thief in the world (also canon autistic). eliot ended the og series saying that he would protect the other two till his dying day (directly after their parent figures got engaged. marriage proposal who?)

I love talking about these idiots too! Thanks for engaging. ☺️
One of the things I so love about this movie (but find frustrating in equal measure lol) is that there can be so many interpretations of the characters because we, the audience, are given nearly no internal motivations for actions.
Art, in particular is said (by the actor himself) to be manipulative and we know him to be fairly repressed. So a lot is read between the lines with him.
I say all this to say that much of what I may see and feel is obvious could make no sense to you, and vice versa. So, it’s fine imo if we just never agree on what we saw lol. I hope my comment didn’t seem dismissive of Art’s feelings for Tashi or your original take. It was my intention to expand on one idea with my own thoughts, not argue about what is and isn’t fact.
That said, I do believe Art loves Tashi. But I think that’s likely where our perspectives diverge intensely. lol While Tashi absolutely has a mermaid quality on that beach, I don’t see Tashi and Art as in a traditional heteronormative relationship in any way besides the fact that she is a woman and he a man.
This is why the princess/prince fairytale storyline feels so off to me. She isn’t his One True Love and the perfect fit to him; that’s pretty much the whole point of the movie imo. They actually aren’t complete without Patrick! So yeah, this particular narrative of Tashi as the love of his life after one night, while compelling to some is 1. Not very interesting to me and 2. Doesn’t fit with what I feel we’ve seen of Art (which is guardedness, wariness in relationships, and a tendency to evade the direct question of his feelings about her “who wouldn’t be in love with you” rather then shyly admitting, “yeah I do have feelings for you” blushing and stammering though it may have been.) If he were in love, it would very much work in his favor, fitting neatly into the image of who he thinks he should be, but I don’t think Art is willing to outright say he is until he knows for certain. He says it later, so we know he’s willing and capable and comfortable enough with it when it’s true.
I believe Art is devoted to Tashi early on. I believe he values her for a lot of reasons. Respects her deeply. Is incredibly infatuated with her. And puts her on a pedestal. But I think his real love for her comes later. As they learn more about each other. And his romantic love comes even later. After she agrees to be his assistant coach. So clearly we just differ on his feelings for her and that’s fine. None of us are wrong or invalid for that.
Since we do, though, I don’t think it makes sense to dive into the point about Art feeling abandoned by Patrick. There are lines that can be interpreted as Art feeling that way (“you’re not here for me?”) and looks, etc. but I feel it’s just dependent on the lens of who is watching as anything else and I don’t think I could convince you otherwise. So I won’t try. Lol
I do agree Art repressed his feelings for Patrick, refuses to recognize them for what they are and that’s why they come out like THIS - in him acting like a legit crazy person.
But the thing I really wanted to respond to here was the paragraphs about Patrick/Tashi and Arts view of them. We don’t get internal motivations, again, so this is all an outside looking in deal. Which was, of course, intentional. But I must admit it’s a particular pet peeve of mine when people diminish Patrick/Tashi to make Art/Tashi’s fail-marriage a fairytale and Patrick the proverbial home wrecker (ironic that Tashi calls Herself the home-wrecker 3 times!). Which it seems you’ve done quite neatly here.
I won’t get into all the ways the film works hard to make Patrick gross and repellent and how that is him from Art’s POV because he’s so open and free in his sexuality and demonstrative of his desire. But I will say that just because Art says something doesn’t make it true or even make it all Art KNOWS to be true. Art tells himself stories to make his life fit into neat and comfortable boxes. This, we know from he and Tashi’s marriage.
Does Patrick admit to having a girlfriend in that hotel room? Or does he just acquiesce to Art’s phrasing because it’s the second time he’s said it (and Patrick’s tried to refute it) and that’s easier than clarifying in the moment that Art calls every girl Patrick fucks his girlfriend because of his weird prudish ideas about sex. lol
And we’re never given any specific dates to know exactly when Tashi’s injury occurred? We’re given vague timestamps a year apart between the intro scenes/them fucking and Art and Tashi at Stanford. I’m not sure where this timeline has come from. That aside, it’s wild to me that Art’s feelings about Tashi are posited as this undying love when he doesn’t know her and Patrick’s are somehow relegated to him not giving a shit just because Art says so.
As you said, he and Patrick talk. I’m hard pressed to believe Patrick has not mooned over Tashi since they started dating. Especially considering he was the one who introduced Art to her in the first place. Had been watching her game. He knew who she was.
And then later when they’re at Stanford Patrick is pining over her poster, whining that he misses her, saying she’ll make an honest man of him (a marriage reference!) and seeming pretty surprised that Art is asking him if he’s “seeing anyone” considering he’s obviously taken. Which is the tone he says it in. Like huh? I’m with Tashi, duh. (Because Art is doing that THING where he conveniently ignores reality for his own story of what he wants to be true.)
Am I open to the idea that Art told himself Patrick wasn’t serious to justify his scheming and fucking shit up? Yes. Do I think this is true? Hell no.
And Art convincing himself it is isn’t noble to me. He does know Patrick cares deeply. He knows Tashi cares too. That’s the only reason his sabotage works. Because they both care A LOT. And he knows they both care enough to be pretty upset and insecure at the idea the other doesn’t.
I can't stop thinking about how during the churro scene, when Art told Patrick he would never do anything to get in the way of his relationship with Tashi, Patrick believed him right away and agreed it wasn't Art's style. Oh, but it was. Art had already been meddling and playing mind games with Tashi, trying to break them up. It was all a lie!
Patrick didn't believe Art was a threat, and told Tashi as much before their fight. It's why Patrick was so shocked (and hurt) when Art told him to go the fuck away. If Art hadn't intervened, I'm pretty sure Patrick would have stayed, or at least, attempted to apologize to Tashi properly. He just didn't realize Art was very much capable of kicking him to the curb to get on Tashi's good graces, and it broke his heart.
This was a side of Art he didn't know, and it completely blindsided him. Patrick underestimated Art's desire for Tashi, and how far he was willing to go to get her, and it cost him their friendship and his girlfriend. Y'all know that popular saying, "If you truly love someone, let them go"? Well, Patrick did.
For 4 whole years and 4 months (March 2007 - July 2011). But he missed them like crazy, had a hole in his heart, the longing was becoming unbearable, he couldn't live without them, and he just had to see them again. So he crashed their practice in Atlanta.

The amount that I ship Ken and the twins is absolutely mad. They were made for each other and to be in this fucked up little throuple (well, I suppose it's just a V because the twins aren't dating each other...) because he needs them and they care about him so much it's almost absurd. It's perfect and just a bit fucked up and I love it for them. I hope they get to give him a big hug and protect him from a world that keeps trying to beat him down.

I am seated with a notebook and pen ready to listen and take notes if you would like to continue talking about Kevin/Jeremy/Allison just so you’re aware. At first I was like Jeremy and Allison… I don’t really see it buuuuuttt I am with you now. I could see Jeremy and Allison getting ready for the club together and wearing matching outfits but not in like a cringy way more of a she looks insanely hot and he looks insanely hot and together their outfits and insane hotness compliment each other and looks a million times hotter so first Allison walks in and Kevin’s like oh shit and then Jeremy walks in behind her and Kevin’s like OH SHIT and then he notices how hot they look together and is like FUCK.
allison and jeremy getting ready in some not-matching matching pink sparkly outfits and kevin walking in like "hm. i feel underdressed now," but he can't stop looking at both of them and he just has that moment where it truly makes sense for him why he's into men and women
give kevin some liquid courage and let him make out with jeremy on a dancefloor and then promptly make out with allison and look. maybe allison and jeremy make out as a joke. and maybe kevin is so insanely into it that he doesn't think it's a joke anymore
